It could mean that there is dirt or bather pollution in water therfore suggesting inadequate filtration. You will need to backwash the filter and raise free chlorine levels to around 10 parts per
million using unstabilised chlorine.

It could be that you are using stabilised chlorines and there is too much stabiliser in the water. This causes the chlorine to take longer to kill micro-organisms and so they build up and make the water hazy. You will need to lower levels of stabiliser by replacing some of the water – either by performing an extra large backwash or by draining to waste. Then top up with fresh water. Superchlorinate by raising free chlorine levels to around 10ppm using unstabilised chlorine.

It could be that the filter is ineffective or has become blocked. You will need to check the sand and replace if necessary. If the sand particles have become coated in calcium (this happens mainly in hard water areas), the filter is not blocked and everything else seems fine, sharpen the sand with a filter cleanser.

It could be fine suspended particles in water that are formed as dissolved hardness salts transform to small solid particles via precipitation. This is
probably a result of a high pH or alkalinity. You will need to lower the pH balance using dry acid until an appropriate reading is the end result.

How often should you clean a swimming pool filter?

A general guideline on any swimming pool filter is to take a reading when the filter is clean, then clean the pool filter when the pressure rises about 10 psi.

As the filter (cartridge, sand or DE) becomes “clogged up” with debris, two things happen:

the overall flow rate of the swimming pool circulation system drops

the back pressure on the filter system rises

What is the most important factor of cartridge filter operation?

One of the most important factors of cartridge filter operation is that there is not too much flow through the filter.

What does too much flow do?

Too much flow significantly decreases the cartridge life and allows stuff to get through the filter and get back into the swimming pool.

You will find on the outside of the filter a maximum pressure reading label. Be certain that your filter does not exceed the stated pressure. Most cartridge filters run at a lower pressure than sand or DE. It is not uncommon to find a cartridge filter pressure reading in the single digits if sized properly for the pump. In general, one multiplies the area of the filter (100 – 400 sq ft is common) by .33 and that is the maximum water flow in gallons per minute through the cartridge.

Cleaning the filter cartridges

When cleaning the filter cartridges, ensure that you do not use a power washer as this can break down the filter material and lower the filter life expectancy. If it is not a perfect white colour when you have finished cleaning, it is ok. Be sure all of the large debris is off and at least annually, soak the cartridge in a cleaning solution to aid in removing some of the buildup.

Have fun

It could be the pH level of the water is too high (alkaline) or too low (acidic). You will need to get a pH of around 7.4. Use dry acid to lower the pH or soda ash to raise the pH.

It could be there are high levels of combined chlorine (chloramines). Which will leave an unpleasant “chlorine” smell. Perform a DPD no3 test and check the results. You will need to Superchlorinate the pool (up to 10ppm free chlorine) in order to break down the chloramines.

You could try and stop it by making sure that combined chlorine forms no more than 1/3 of the total chlorine in the pool.

It could be that you are using a detergent that is not chlorine compatible, for example to remove tide-marks or to clear pool sides. Some detergents react with the chlorine and these reactions can cause irritation to the skin and eyes. Traces of soaps and shampoos can cause similar reactions. You will need to Superchlorinate to ensure that all of the detergent(s) has/have reacted away.

You could try and stop it by switching to cleaners that are compatible with chlorine or clean manually.

It could be that you are using the pool whilst sweaty or wearing makeup. Sweat and cosmetics both contain nitrogenous compounds which react with free chlorine. You will need to have a thorough wash or shower before entering the pool.

Hope this helps

Swimming (hydrotherapy) is recommended by vets for a variety of ailments and conditions such as muscle and spinal injuires, hip dysplasia and arthritis. Swimming helps ease stiffness by gentle massage and increases blood flow to the body by way of hydrojets and warm water as the animal is weightless whilst it swims.

Swimming also acts as a great form of exercise by increasing the animals fitness and stamina whilst providing pain relief at the same time, and it is especially helpful if the animal is recovering from an injury or operation as it speeds up recovery after surgery.

Hydrotherapy is also available for fit and healthy dogs who enjoy swimming and it is also suitable for building and toning muscles in show dogs.

Whether you’re a vet or someone who has a pool for their dogs at home Pool Part Mart is able to help you with a wonderful product called Net Skim at the price of £10.80.

Net Skim is a fine mesh disposable net that fits inside your skimmer basket and comes in boxes of twelve and is very good for catching fur.

Well managed swimming pool maintenance is your first line of defense in preventing most common problems. Following this easy maintenance checklist should help keep your pool water crystal clear and trouble free.

Routine Swimming Pool Maintenance:

TWICE A WEEK:
1. Use Test Strips to Check and maintain your Chemicals Such as keep your ph. levels at 7.4 – 7.6.
2. Test and maintain the free available chlorine level at 1.0 – 3.0 ppm.
3. Empty the skimmer baskets and clean tile or pool water at water line with Pool Surface Cleaner, and skim leaves, insects and other floating debris from the pool surface.

ONCE A WEEK:
1. Shock the pool by adding one bag of Shock per 10,000 gallons. Additional shock may be needed after a rain storm, heavy bather load, or exceptionally hot weather.
2. Add a maintenance dose of Algae Preventative or to prevent algae growth.
3. Brush walls and use a pool vacuum to clean floors.

MONTHLY:
Take a water sample to your professional Water Testing Service or use our Test Strips for a complete Swimming Pool Chemicals analysis.

MID-SEASON:
Clean your filter with Filter Cleaner Degreaser to remove any oils and grease that may have accumulated on your filter.
After using a Flock or Metal Remover wait 24 to 36 hrs, then use your Pool Vacuum to clean pool floor before swimming.
On Rainy or Windy Days Never Test your Pool Water using AquaChek Test Strips, or any other Test kit.

How to paint your pool with Pool Coating System 10

What is Pool Coating System 10?

It is a twin pack water based resin coating designed for use in the marine, aquatic and leisure industry

What are the advantages of using Pool Coating System 10?

When it has dried, it forms a tough waterproof non-toxic barrier that is resistant to oil and most mild chemicals.

It can be applied to marbleite, glass fibre, sand and cement render and other hard surfaces

Step One – Get Ready

Remove any existing liner and make sure that surfaces are clean and free of contamination and grease.

If your swimming pool is already painted you do not need to remove the existing paint or coating, you only need to sand and clean the existing paint to secure a sound base for Pool Coating System 10.

The pool surface can be slightly damp but not wet or subjected to running water.

Any holes should be filled and all leaks must be stopped using

If damp or wet surfaces are there constantly get some technical advice.

Step 2 – Mix it up

Confirm that you have a window of good weather 4 hours per coat and that the air temperature is above 10 ºC. Stir the contents of the large tin and then add the contents of the small tin and mix firmly for 4 minutes to ensure it is thoroughly mixed. A drill with a mixing paddle is brilliant for this.

Step 3 – Apply it

Apply using brush, roller or airless spray

Let it dry for 24 hours, (drying time is heat dependent – warmer conditions shorten the drying time)

Apply a second coat and leave it for a further 24 hours

Step 4 – Refilling pool

Leave Pool Coating System 10 to fully cure for 5 days with an air temperature of 20º C, a couple of days longer at lower temperatures or less at higher temperatures. Then wash the pool with a hosepipe and drain before refilling it.

Water Companies want us to ‘Use water wisely’

Hosepipe bans were introduced a year ago in many parts of the UK and water companies have urged people to carefully use their water even though 2012 was the second wettest year on record.

Last April the heavy rain began and continued persistently with few breaks through summer, autumn and winter which means the levels of the reservoir and underground aquifer stocks are well above average.

Water companies have said there is very little prospect of a hosepipe ban in 2013, yet they urge us to use our water wisely. If we all used water wisely it would help keep stocks at a good level should the UK experience drought conditions in the near future.

Customers may feel slightly annoyed by the advice to ‘use water wisely’, as their water bills appear to rise annually.

South East Water, Thames Water and Anglian have all stated a similar message of “using water wisely”. All three companies were amongst the seven who imposed hosepipe bans last year.

Apart from a dry February, the long period of rain has meant that reservoir stocks in England and Walets are well above average, according to the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology. The Met Office backs up the theory that water levels will stay high this year as they do not believe it to be an especially dry summer.

Many areas of the UK continue to be affected by the threat of flooding which seems to be a long term problem now.

Find out if your pool has a leak

Fill a bucket with water from the pool and set it on the steps of your pool with the top of the bucket above water level. This will keep the water in the bucket the same temperature as the pool. If you do not have steps, you can try balancing the bucket on the top ladder tread. Now, compare the water loss between the bucket and your pool over a period of several days, the longer the better. If you see a difference, you have a leak.

Please note: Ensure your bucket does not have a hole in it

Find out where the leak is?

Fill the pool to its normal level and mark it with a piece of duct tape. Next with your filter system running the whole time, wait 12 to 24 hours and measure the loss of water. Then refill the pool back to the same level and with the filter system off, wait the same amount of time (also over the same part of the day) and measure the water loss.

If you are losing more water with the filter system running, the leak is on the pressure side of your plumbing somewhere PAST the impeller of the pump.

If you are losing less water with the filter system not running, the leak is on the vacuum side of your plumbing somewhere BEFORE the impeller of the pump. Please note that in this case, most of the time the pool only loses water when the system is off and not when it’s on.

If the water loss is the same, then your leak is in the structure of the pool and not in the plumbing.

Leak in the plumbing

We assume that there is not an obvious leak that you can see on the filter system. Did you check where your backwash line comes out? There are two ways to find this leak. First, you can pressure test the lines, then dig, following the leaking line till you find it. You can also call in your local leak detection service. We would highly recommend the latter, unless you like to dig. Professionals will use “geophones” to listen for the leak and only dig where necessary! We also have fix a leak which is brilliant for this that you can use.

Leak in the structure of a concrete pool

You will need some food coloring for this, and you will want to turn off the pump at least an hour before you do this. In a concrete pool, any cracks in the shell are usually obvious. By squeezing out the food coloring near the crack, you will see the crack pull the food coloring in. That will show you where the pool is leaking. If there are no visible cracks, you will want to squeeze out the food coloring around any of the items that pierce the shell of the pool. Be sure to check the “mouth” of the skimmer where the plastic of the skimmer meets the concrete. This area is very susceptible to movement and often separates causing a leak.

Once the leak is found, it is easy to fix using a patching material – liner repair kits. Most of them will work under water. After patching, check again with your food coloring to make sure you plugged the leak. Please note that if you patch near a fitting, you will want to leave the pump off while it cures, so the flow of water doesn’t wash the patch away.

What if you have a vinyl pool with a leak? A leak can be a little harder to find and fix in a vinyl pool, but it’s not impossible. We would recommend that you first check around all the items that pierce the liner. If you find that the liner has pulled away or is leaking behind a fitting, we recommend that you call in your local pool professional at this point. If you mess this repair up you could easily be looking at a new liner, which we do sell.

If you do not detect a leak around the fittings, you will need to search the liner itself. A lot of vinyl liners have a pattern on the walls or bottom which can make it difficult to see a hole. Sometimes by running your hand over the floor and walls you may feel a tear or puncture that’s not easily visible. Sometimes there is a depression on the floor which might indicate erosion caused by the flow of water. After finding the leak it is an easy matter to patch, using a vinyl patch kit and following the directions.

The warm weather is approaching, it’s time to think about swimming outside.

Here are some steps should help you get your swimming pool open the right way for the pool season.

Opening your Pool

The first thing you must do is remove the swimming pool cover. If there are leaves or other debris on the cover, use your leaf net to remove them.

Then pump off any standing water if you have a solid cover. Note: if your cover has a hole in it, you will be pumping water out of the swimming pool. This can lead to draining the pool if you do not watch for this.

After removing the cover, be sure to clean it, let it dry, and store for the season.

You will need to add water, bringing the level up to its normal operating level.

Remove any freeze plugs, Gizzmo’s, and other items installed to protect against freezing.

You should have cleaned your filter thoroughly when you closed the pool for the winter. If not, you should do it now.

Now, start your filter system up, being sure to prime the pump before starting the motor. Be sure to purge all the air from the plumbing and equipment. Warning: Air will be compressed during this procedure. Be sure to release any built up pressure before opening your filter, pump, or chemical feeder.

Check for any leaks.

Assess the pool itself. Hopefully, you had a solid cover on and the water is as clear and blue as when you closed it. If not, you will want to remove any large debris with your leaf net, leaf rake, or leaf eater.

Any dirt, sand, algae, or other small debris should be vacuumed to waste.

After cleaning the pool, it’s time to check the water chemistry.

DO NOT begin by throwing a bunch of chlorine or other chemicals into the water. Adding chlorine and other chemicals in certain circumstances can damage and/or stain your pool surface.

Allow the water to circulate at least 8-12 hours, so that the water that was added has time to mix with the water in the pool.

After that time, test it thoroughly, then add the necessary chemicals in the proper sequence to balance the water chemistry. We suggest taking a water sample to your local pool professional to have it tested for pH, Total Alkalinity, Calcium Hardness, etc. Be sure to follow the procedure they describe to avoid damage to your pool’s surface.

Install handrails, ladders, etc. being sure to inspect them for wear and damage. If you apply car wax to the stainless steel rails, it will help protect them from corrosion.

Inspect the diving board. It should be free of stress cracks and the surface should have a non-skid surface. If the board has any stress cracks, it should be replaced. If the surface has been worn smooth, you can use a refinishing kit to correct this.

Tile lines can be cleaned with baking soda and a sponge if you do not have any pool tile cleaner. Do not use any household cleaners (especially abrasives) to clean the tile. You do not want to swim in these chemicals.

Enjoy your beautiful pool!

Have fun

What turns your hair green in the pool?

Oxidized copper is what turns hair green and it can be because of high copper content in the local water supply or because the pool water is corrosive or both.

When did you last have your swimming pool boiler serviced?

Swimming pool boilers need regular servicing, this is for your safety, boiler efficiency and is often a part of your manufacturers guarantee.

Gas Regulations recommend a regular schedule of maintenance is carried out and manufacturers also recommend annual servicing.

If your swimming pool has a gas boiler and is part of a rented property and you are the tenant, your landlord has a duty under the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998 to arrange maintenance and annual servicing by a GAS SAFE-registered installer with a HWB1 Certificate.

Don’t waste your money and fuel on a poorly maintained or faulty swimming pool boiler, ensure it is serviced annually and kept in good working order.

In order to keep it in good working order get the best parts from the best suppliers.

Pool Part Mart specialise in supplying swimming pool boiler spares if it is not on our website we are on the end of the phone ready to help you in any way.
